“ From the Commander”
Comrades,First and foremost, please accept my apology for the delay in receiving this issue of your magazine. No excuses! I will do everything in my power to ensure that it never happens again. Second, you may notice a number of personnel changes in your national leadership. This year we have had unanticipated changes at the National Adjutant and Editor positions. John Hassenplug and Jo Lawrence stepped down as National Adjutant and Editor of The Patriot, respectively. Those positions are incredibly demanding of time and energy, and both felt that it would be best for SAMS if we got some “new blood” in that it could give the time, energy and enthusiasm that those responsibilities require. In addition, W. Hal Morrison and Al Ankrum recently resigned as Councilors. I’ed like to take this opportunity to acknowledge the contributions of these two gentlemen: Al and Hal were charter members of SAMS, making their contributions to SAMS span more than three decades. Al served multiple terms as National Commander, and every time the Society has needed him he stepped up and bailed us out once again. He did so again this year, agreeing to temporarily serve on the Council when Robbie Bryant moved into the National Adjutant position. He will be relinquishing his Council seat at the end of the year. I would use this space to publicly thank Al for his advice and counsel during this year. His years as National Commander give him unparalleled insights into this job, and he has shared his wisdom with me frequently this year. I will always be grateful. Hal Morrison served for most of the last 30 years on the SAMS Council. Only those who have served in a similar position for a national organization like ours can fully appreciate the dedication of hours, money, and sacrifice of |

familytime that involves.
Speaking of family time, I would be remiss if I failed to acknowledge the parallel commitment of Sonia Ankrum and Sherry Morrison, their spouses. When a veteran makes a commitment, whether to our country or to our Society, our families come along for the ride. Sonia and Sherry have been a big part of SAMS even though they didnet get the titles and recognition. I’d like to say thank you to them, as well. National Vice-Commander Jerry Paules sub-mission to this issue goes into a bit more detail regarding the year in SAMS, so far. I concur with everything he says, but will note for your benefit that he minimizes his own contribution. Jerry continues to prove one of the most valuable members SAMS has, at any level. He has been active in every aspect of the Society, and has helped in overcoming every “challenge” that has presented itself in 2011. Thanks, Jerry! Since this issue arrives during the holidays in-stead of before the Games season, Iell skip the pep talk about recruiting and just wish you a very Merry Christmas, and sincere hopes for the best that 2012 can bring you and yours. With Fire and Sword, —Tim Cooke, NC
