Post 2: I am being posted, as of December 3, 2007, to London, England for one to three years. Because I will be out of the area, I unfortunately will have to resign as the Post 2 Commander of SAMS. It has been both an honor and a privilege to serve as the Post 2 Commander for a great organization as SAMS. I will always be just one email away, so if there is anything I can do for you in London, please let me know. However, I would like to remain the National Tartan Day representative for SAMS. Since my home base will be Washington, DC and I will be coming back for brief visits throughout the year, and will be keeping in touch with the Congressional Scottish Caucus. Of note, the Presidential NTD Proclamation is being forwarded this month to the President for signature. Mr. Gil Smith, Deputy Assistant Secretary at the Department of Agriculture, who just came from a position on the White House staff, has agreed to both endorse and deliver the package to the President for signature. In addition to the package sent to the White House last year, we have added an additional 50 pages to include a dozen State NTD proclamations, more signatures on the online petition, letters from Congressmen Duncan and McIntyre and Senators Trent Lott and John Warner, etc. This has been a three year endeavor, and I want to thank SAMS for all your support. Now, let’s keep our fingers crossed. Always the best to everyone. —Martha J. Walls Post 7: Activities slowed down during the summer months due to the heat and humidity in Coastal Georgia. However, our Color Guard participated in the Annual Brooklet Peanut Festival. This event marks the beginning of the Post’s “marching season.” The Post continues to be an active participant in the affairs of Chatham Co. Veteran’s Council winning kudos for their efforts. The main efforts of the Post have been the planning and implementing the Second Annual Braveheart Poker Run on Aug. 25th. This successful endeavor raised over $2,000 which will be used to support such various activities as ROTC awards, Savannah WW II Monument, and support of local pipers and dancers. The Post is preparing for its upcoming elections and 20th Anniversary. —Chuck Rogers, Adjutant, Post 7 Post 48: In October my wife, Mary Kay and I went to Las Vegas for the Western Regional Conference. I believe it was very worthwhile and I was happy to see so many in attendance. I felt that we accomplished something therefore making the trip very rewarding. After returning home, we had a funeral service for another of our brave AZ soldiers. Five days later, we had the privilege of going to welcome home 100 plus AZ National Guard troops. We would rather do one thousand of these than just one at the cemetery. |

In Oct. we helped packaged approximately 150 boxes to send to our local servicemen and women deployed in Iraq and Afghanistan. We do this the last Wednesday of each month. We are planning to send a box to every one of the 330 names on our list so they will get them in time for Christmas. Our Post donated $500.00 toward making this goal a reality. We do this in conjunction with the Military Family Support Group whom we have partnered with for quite some time now. We accept money for the group so that those who donate will be able to use it as a tax deduction, thus making them more willing to donate. Nov. 3-4 found our Post at the Tucson Highland Games where we once again to did Colors for the opening ceremony. Tucson has expanded its games to a two-day event and is improving with each year. We had many people who were interested in SAMS and handed out lots of info and literature. Hopefully we can get enough people in the Tucson area that we can find one who is willing to accept the job of PC. Nov. 9th Post 48 members narrated a Flag folding for about two hundred grade-school children for their “Patriots Day.” As one of our people stated, “This was much better than when we do something like this for a veterans group because in this instance, we were teaching young minds and in the other case, we are “preaching to the choir” so to speak. We enjoy being able to help educate our younger generations so they will understand about patriotism, something our schools no longer seem to do.” Nov. 11th we were once again involved with the Honoring of the 23 British Royal Air Force pilots who perished while training for WWII while here in AZ at Falcon Field. We posted and retrieved the colors and supplied escorts for those laying wreaths. We then proceeded to the other side of Phoenix about 30 miles to Peoria where we performed our “Remembrance Table” for an American Legion Post. The following day we were at the AZ State Veterans Home where we did our regular Veterans Day cook-out for the residents. Some of our post members took part in the VA’s Veterans Day Parade riding in a military 5 ton truck, which took third place honors for ‘Military Vehicle.’ The Governor attended the cook-out and after visiting with the residents of the Home she shook hands and thanked each of the Post 48 members and associates for being there for our fellow veterans. It was our honor as usual to be able to do this for our senior veterans. On Nov. 17 we had the pleasure of being at the dedication of a monument placed at a roadside rest area on I-17 between Phoenix and Flagstaff. This monument honors of all the Arizona veterans and is located the part of I-17 known as the Arizona Veterans Highway. . . . continued |
